Guinea urged bauxite miners to build alumina refineries in the country
Guinea’s interim government has given international mining companies until May 2022 to submit production plans for refining bauxite into alumina.
The country has sought to use its mineral wealth for economic development, frequently urging development companies in recent years to commit to building local production facilities to turn bauxite into alumina, which has a higher value.
Guinea’s interim government, which came to power in a coup in September 2021, has tightened its stance on multinationals. Last month, it suspended all activities at a major iron ore mine.
The interim government said the companies targeted by the alumina ultimatum included Societe Miniere de Boke (SMB) and Compagnie des Bauxite de Guinee (CBG), two of Guinea’s largest producers of Bauxite.
